Peter Mather is a photojournalist based in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is a fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), and is represented by National Geographic Creative. His most recent work has focused on the Gwich’in First Nation people, their connection to the Porcupine caribou herd, and the threats they face from potential development in the calving and nursing grounds of the herd.

As the U.S. resumes its debate over whether to drill for oil at the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd on Alaska’s north coast, photographer Peter Mather shares some shots and personal experiences with the herd and the Gwich’in, whose culture is tied to it.
